The Power of Many
Joshua 17:17-18, "And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong."
There are two sources of power that I would like to talk about this morning. One has to do with the collective power of many people doing the same thing at the same time with the same purpose. The other is the super natural power of God, that exceeds the power of any and all people no matter how great they are in number or what their purpose may be.
Joshua told the tribe of Joseph they would be successful in driving out the Canaanites though they had iron chariots and were strong. He was able to offer this promise because of the two sources of power mentioned above. As a collective group of people the tribe of Joseph was large in number and had great power. But if they never acted together to defeat the Canaanites, no matter what kind of power they possessed, it would not have happened. We should not ignore either of these sources of power. Both are important as we seek to impact the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We have the promise of God's power in our lives. "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you..." (Acts 1:8 a).
Ephesians 3:20, "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us."
The power of the early church is evident as you read the Book of Acts. Why was the church so powerful? BECAUSE THEY WERE IN ONE ACCORD AND HAD RECEIVED THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Read the following verses about the church being in one accord or of the same mind: Acts 2:1, 2:46, 4:24, 5:12, 15:25, 2 Corinthians 13:11, Philippians 1:27 and 2:2.
The church can conquer any obstacle, or enemy, if it relies upon the two sources of power God makes available, if it is unified and dependent upon the Lord.
Philippians 2:2, "Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind."
Let's tap into the power God has given us to defeat the world, Satan, and the flesh.
