Proverbs 3:13

Good Morning,

Today's passage is simply a discourse on wisdom and the positive impact it has on the lives of those who seek her.  The positive nature of verse 13 itself, should motivate us to seek after godly wisdom.  "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding." The word translated "happy" is frequently rendered as "blessed."  Anyone who is blessed should most definitely be happy!  The reason so many people aren't happy is that they reject the source of it, which is the wisdom which comes from God and His Word.  Psalm 1:1-2 states, "BLESSED is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law doth he meditate day and night."  When we follow after wisdom, we minimize heartache, and success becomes normal.

Verse 14 teaches that wisdom and understanding in life are far superior to monetary wealth.  You have heard, "Money can't buy happiness," that is so true.  "For the merchandise of it (wisdom) is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold."  The word "merchandise" carries with it the idea of gain or profit.  Listen as verses 15-18 continue building this thought, "She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honour. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and HAPPY is every one that retaineth her."

Solomon demonstrates it was by means of wisdom and understanding that God created things.  Yes, without His power it would not have been possible, yet wisdom and understanding were at the heart of what God did in creation.  "The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. 20 By his knowledge, the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew." (19-20)

Solomon again urges his son to embrace wisdom and understanding for the valuable resources they are (vs. 21) "So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. 23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. 24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet." (22-24)  Wisdom truly is valuable!

This section closes providing encouragement to the believer who embraces wisdom, reminding us not to fear when trouble arises in our lives because our confidence has found a resting place in the Lord God Almighty.  "Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. 26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken."  God is our rock and our fortress!

May you have a great day as you meditate upon the value of wisdom, and the benefits it provides for each one who pursues it.
